My brave little girl................

On Friday Faith went in for her yearly examination and she was given the PPD skin test. She was given this test at a year old in which it came back positive. Her Dr.s then called it a false positive due to her having the immunization. We were expecting this at that time. We were also told that her tests may always come back positive. Well we went back to the Dr. today for the reading and again it is positive. Her Dr. now wants it treated as a true positive. She says the immunization would no longer be in her system and it can not be treated as a false positive. She was given a chest x-ray today in which we get the results back on Friday. She also wants to start antibiotic treatment which will be a pill everyday for 9 months. I was a little surprised by all of this as I really was not expecting for her to be treated for it. Has anyone else been through this same experience in which their child's test comes back positive? I'm nervous about her being on an antibiotic for 9 months if it really is not necessary, yet we do not want to take any chances. I'm finding this all a bit confusing and wondering if in fact Faith should have been treated for it when she was a baby. The Dr. now wants the entire family tested for it so I made our appointments for Friday when we go in for Faith's follow up appointment. If anyone has anything to share on this I would really appreciate it!!
Faith has been SO brave with all of her appointments, shots, and tests. We went in for a simple routine examination to get her already for Kindergarten and we had no idea she would end up needing more tests. Other than this PPD thing she is doing excellent! She is growing and thriving and one smart little girl!
She is now 42 inches and 40 lbs. Her Dr. says she will probably be about 5'4-5'5 as a grown-up.
Here are some pictures I took of Faith showing off her new Matilda Jane dress. Notice the spot on her dress? Seconds after putting the dress on she spilled something on it. I'm afraid she takes after her Mommy with this one. Between the two of us our clothes always have something on them.

At first Faith refused to wear this dress. She just does not like dresses! Then I told her she could wear pants with it. Her face brightened up and she said, "OK I love it!" I found these pants she is wearing that go with another outfit of hers and I think they look really cute with the dress.

Will keep everyone posted on the PPD testing!!!!!!

Oh, gosh...I am sorry to hear about her positive test result. I have a friend who went through the same thing, but her daughter was a baby when she received treatment and the hardest part was the medicine's bad taste and of course the part of having to take it for 9 months. Other than that...they did not have any problems. Let us know how the x-rays come out.

The dress is sooo adorable and yes, I would have thought the pants came with the dress. Great match!

Have a great week!

Hi,
Ask for a referral to a specialist that deals with tuberculosis- maybe a infectious disease doctor or a travel clinic that nows about it. Check it out carefully before making her take all that medication. Can't believe how fast our girls are growing up.

Colleen, ouch! I hope everything turns out. We haven't had any experience with this ourselves and so far only one child in Katie-Beth's group has had a positive PPD. I feel for you and Faith, and although I can't offer any advice, my thoughts are with you.

The dress is darling. And I empathize completely with always having a spot on my clothes!

She is such a CUTIE pie!!! And i am so sorry that you all are going through this. Our Ped had us redo everything and when she called to say the PPD was negative, she sounded surprised. She actually had me come in sooner rather than later to redo vacs afraid that if she did have this one thing it coujld spread in public places. Maybe they are seeing alot of it with China Children or just in general? Anyway, i will be keeping you all in my prayers!!

Dear Colleen:

Aww! Big cuddles to a brave little girl! Keeping you and Faith and your family in our prayers.

Faith is growing up so beautifully - it is a joy to follow your lives and to hear all about her adventures with her brothers! She's a treasure, indeed.

She's beautiful in her dress! I do miss all the fantastic shopping in the USA!

Thank you for your very lovely messages on our blog. I'm so pleased we can stay connected this way!

lots of love to you all!

Hi Colleen,

I don't know how I came upon your blog...somehow in adoption land I found you. Anyway, our daughter 3.5 and adopted from China also had a positive PPD test (for our homestudy for 2nd adoption). Our ped. advised that there really is no way to know if it is from the BCG vaccine or if she was exposed. The new blood test is actually only 80% accurate. So, we decided to go ahead with the meds. We have now been on the INH (isonisaid) for about 2 months(only 7 to go!). It is really not that big of a deal, she gets the pill ground up with applesauce right before bedtime each night. As long as she has no side effects from the meds, it is worth it in my opinion to not have to worry about TB ever again for sure. Email me if you have any ?'s. sherylholle@msn.com
Blessings,

Our Lucy also tested positive, as did our mentor's daughter Becca. Becca's first test at a year was negative, and at 3 years was positive. Lucy's first test upon coming back from China was positive. The worst part of the medicine is truly that it tastes awful (even with the flavoring!)and becaue they have to take it for so long. I was also a little uneasy because it can, although rare, cause liver damage, but Lucy's GI Dr told us she would be fine, and she was! More of an inconvenience than anything! Good luck!!
