Good Job Ruby and Happy 2nd Birthday!

Well Ruby and I FINALLY got started on our hands on training to do therapy reading with the children at the library. We went this morning for our first session and just a couple more and we will be on our own! Ruby did really well although I could tell she was nervous. I love her vest she has to wear. Isn't it cute? She's a working girl now!Ruby showing off her name on her vest.

She's so proud!

Ruby will turn 2 years old Sept. 29th.
We love you our Ruby girl!

RESPECTFUL ADOPTION LANGUAGE

I came across this article on an adoption website and being the parent of both bio/adopted children I thought it was worded perfectly. Although we have never experienced any negative comments regarding adoption there have been times when comments were made due to just plain ignorance or uneducated on adoption. My hope is that one day adoption will be viewed just as natural as giving birth because for me as a parent it is just that.

RESPECTFUL ADOPTION LANGUAGE

Using accurate, positive, and respectful language when discussing adoption is a vital part of being sensitive to all individuals touched by adoption. Intentionally using constructive and precise terms educates everyone about the following realities of adoption:

1. Adoption, like birth, is a valid way to build a family. Adoption is not second best.

2. Children who are adopted are just as loved and valued as children born into the family.

3. The bonds in adoptive families are "real" and the relationships are permanent.

4. Adoption happens through a series of choices. Adopted children are not victims that need pity. Likewise, adoptive parents are not saints or saviors that need to be glorified.

5. People who are a part of the child's history are respected and valued.

PARENTING TIP: Here are a few guidelines for presenting a positive, accurate, and realistic image of adoption to others.

1. Only say "adopted" child or "adoptive" parent when it is relevant. Otherwise, just say "child" or "parent." Ask yourself, "Why am I describing how our family was formed? Is it relevant here?"

2. You are the "real" and "natural" (not artificial!) parents of your child. When people use these terms to refer to the biological/birth parents, educate them.

3. Remember that adoption is an event, not a chronic condition. Say that your child "was" adopted, not "is" adopted.

4. Terms like "put up for adoption" or "given up for adoption" objectify the child, invoke pity, and imply that the child has little value. It is better to say that an adoption plan was made, even if that plan was made by a government.

5. Remember to refer to all children in your family as your "own." Saying "own child" only when referring to your biological child implies that your adopted child is an outsider.

And lastly...

6. Don't let people glorify you because you adopted a child. Although it may feel flattering, the implication of such a comment is that your child should be eternally grateful that you "saved" her. What a tremendous burden for a child to carry.

Goodbye Summer......Hello Fall!

It's always hard for me to say good-bye to summer as it's my favorite time of year with its lazy days, the kids being home from school, the warm sunshine, going barefoot, and not doing too much of anything. There's no denying though that fall is among us now in northern CA. Sigh. I have to admit though that I really do enjoy the fall season here in northern CA. The cool crisp evenings when we open all the windows, the beautiful trees with all the colors, all the pumpkin patches and hay rides, the chilly brisk mornings that make you want to just get out and walk, and preparing for Halloween with the kids. (Faith's costume has already been ordered and in hand!) Growing up in Texas I never experienced falls quite like I have here. Here are a few fall pictures from last year. I think I really am looking forward to fall after all........

Orlando Florida Trip With Good Friends........

Here are some pictures from our Orlando trip. We had such a fantastic trip with a fun filled week of Disney, Sea World, hanging by the pool, and best of all just being together! There is nothing better than friends you have been away from and you meet up and it is like you have never left! Very special!

Survivor!

I have never really watched Survivor (not that I'm not a fan or anything, I just never had the time to sit down and watch it) but this season I plan to do my best to watch, being that it was filmed in my daughters birth country! I look forward to seeing some of the sights of China. The season starts tomorrow night.

September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: Eat at Chilis on September 24th!!

It seems like all of us are touched by cancer in some way and I can't imagine what it must be like for a child to be fighting this disease. They always seem to have so much strength and courage. If you go to http://www.stjude.org/ you can read about the wonderful work they are doing for these children and ways that you can help. Chilis restaurant is offering a donation of all proceeds to go to them on the day of September 24th (Monday) so everyone take a break and eat at Chilis on this day!!!

I've always tried to support St. Jude in the small ways that I can and just wanted to share this information to help these wonderful children that are such heros in my eyes. They have some really cute gifts you can order that are made by patients at the hospital and have some cute clothing as well. I have ordered a few of their t-shirts for myself and Faith and they are really cute and good quality shirts. In the photo above Faith is wearing a "love" shirt I ordered from them last Christmas. Check it out and pass the information on!!!!

Our girls

Faith and I got back a few days ago from spending a week in Orlando with our wonderful friends that flew in from England to meet us there. We met them while stationed in England and my friend also adopted her precious daughter from China. Unfortunately she received her referral right after we left England to come back to the States so I did not get to meet her daughter until this past week!! It was a very special week and so wonderful seeing our girls together! I took loads of photos so these are just a few black and whites. I will post more through out the week. I am playing catch-up at home after being gone for a week!
